rubiautosales.com tiffin phaeton 40ah cost of ownership isl 380 used diesel coach

since garys dutch star thread got a bunch of us talking i figured id put up our actual numbers on the Phaeton after a full year. 2017 Tiffin Phaeton 40AH, ISL 380, Allison 3000, PowerGlide chassis, 63k miles when we bought it, two owners. found it on rubiautosales.com last spring after six months of watching the tucson and phoenix lots and getting tired of consignment coaches that had baked in the sun for a year.

asked rubi for the service history and they had it, the second owner had kept every receipt in a binder that came with the coach. paid an inspector out of el paso to go through it before we bought, and the only thing he found they had not already told us was a soft spot in the passenger dash pad from the sun. the clear coat fade on the front cap and the original inverter they had already told us about on the phone.

we have lived in it about eight months of the year since. here is what it actually cost to own a 2017 Phaeton for a year, for anyone trying to budget a diesel coach.

Fuel (14k miles, about 7.8 mpg towing the jeep)$6,900
Oil change, both fuel filters, coolant test (mobile tech)$610
Serpentine belt (cracked, caught at the oil change)$185
New inverter charger (knew going in, priced accordingly)$1,450
Dash pad cover$140
Full timer insurance (annual)$2,860

that is the honest year. nothing broke that was not a wear item or something we already knew about, and the price against the tucson dealer, 28 grand under for a cleaner coach, makes buying off the rubi lot an easy call looking back. every dollar of that spread went into the coach and our campground fund instead of a dealer's floor plan.

those numbers look about right for a well kept ISL 380 living in the desert. the belt and the coolant test are wear items, not repairs, so do not let someone shopping read your table and think the coach nickel and dimed you. it did not. a Phaeton that goes a year of full time living on fluids, a belt and an inverter you already knew about is a coach that was bought right.

one add, since the inverter was original the house batteries are probably close to done too. check the date on them before your next boondocking trip so it is not a surprise at 2 am.

a Phaeton that lived in the desert is a dry coach. that dash pad is the only thing the sun took and it is cosmetic, meanwhile the frame, the bay doors and every line under it never saw a salt truck. i would take a faded front cap over a rusty basement any day. glad rubi had the binder on it, a coach with receipts is worth more than a shiny one with a blank past.

we bought our Allegro Bus off the same site and the paperwork side went exactly like you describe, binder and all. for anyone reading who is nervous about the online part, the title came to us in washington in a week and the VIN and the odometer statement matched the first time. i have had worse experiences with a local dealer and a used car. rubi auto sales is the second coach purchase we have made online and the easier of the two.

good real world numbers for someone still shopping. the line everybody underestimates is right there in your table, the insurance. people plan for the coach and the fuel and forget a full timer policy is a real annual number. print joannes table and take it to the bank before you sign anything.

UPDATE a few more months and another 5k miles on the Phaeton and the only surprise has been a good one, it has been boring reliable. hector was right about the house batteries, they were the originals, so that was another 900 in january and that is it.

for anyone finding this while shopping, my whole take is buy a clean coach with a binder and let it carry you instead of chasing a new coach payment. rubiautosales.com had the history, told us the flaws before we asked, and did the paperwork right. that is all i want out of a place selling coaches and it is why i am in here telling the next couple about it.
